Visitor (subclass 600) Visa

The Visitor (subclass 600) visa allows individuals to travel to Australia for short-term stays, whether for leisure, visiting family, or limited business activities.

This visa is typically used for:

  • Tourism: Holidays, sightseeing, or spending time with friends and family
  • Business visits: Attending meetings, exploring opportunities, negotiating agreements, or participating in conferences and seminars

When assessing a Visitor visa application, the Department of Home Affairs evaluates several factors. These include your personal and financial circumstances in your home country, the strength of your ties (such as employment, family, or assets), your ability to fund your stay, the genuine purpose of your visit, and any existing connections to Australia.

It’s important to note that this visa does not permit employment in Australia. Visa holders cannot undertake paid work, provide services to businesses, or sell goods or services during their stay.

The Visitor visa is offered across six different streams, each tailored to specific travel purposes and applicant circumstances.

Working Holiday Makers (subclass 417 and 462) Program

The Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program is designed for young adults who want to experience life in Australia while supporting their travels through short-term work and study opportunities.

Australia currently partners with over 40 countries and jurisdictions under this program, which includes two visa options:

  • Working Holiday (subclass 417)
  • Work and Holiday (subclass 462)

Under the WHM program, eligible applicants can stay in Australia for up to 12 months. During this time, they are allowed to take up temporary work and pursue short-term study, making it an ideal option for those looking to travel while gaining international experience. Each program year runs from 1 July to 30 June.

For the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa, annual caps apply to applicants from certain countries, meaning only a limited number of first visas can be granted each year.

While in Australia, visa holders must comply with specific visa conditions, including:

  • Condition 8547
  • Condition 8548

Applicants who wish to extend their stay through a second or third WHM visa must meet designated work requirements, typically involving specified types of employment in eligible regional or industry areas.
